Rae Spoon * LAL and ESL
Rae Spoon has been called one of Canadas best songwriters and their new album Armour does not disappoint. The ten new songs hold all of the lyrical depth indicative of Spoons compositions while showcasing their distinctive voice. Armour, Spoons eighth solo album, is the highly anticipated follow-up to Polaris Prize nominated My Prairie Home. Rae is returning to play Vancouver after two sold-out shows on their album release tour in March.
Rosina Kazi and Nicholas Murray, better known as the Toronto-based Electronic duo LAL, have deep roots within the Canadian music scene with 18 years of performing and an expansive catalogue of innovative records to their credit. Their latest album, Find Safety, is the result of three years of studio work, offering a compellingly danceable and provocative political statement all at once.
E.S.L. is a chamber pop quartet with half the band based out of Salt Spring Island and half out of Vancouver. Featuring Marta McKeever (Fan Death, Girl Nobody) on vocals and piano, Diona Davies (Geoff Berner, Carolyn Mark, Po' Girl) on violin and harmonies, Tess Kitchen (Wintermitts) on trumpet and harmonies and Joy Mullen (Cris Derksen, Fortresses) on drums, this band of women have been together since 2005. This is the release show for the "Everyone Say Love" EP will be released on Rae Spoon's label Coax Records. E.S.L.'s debut album "Eye Contact", was a huge success and landed them gigs at Folk Festivals all over Canada.
Veering wildly between Polish cabaret and chamber pop, to playful hip hop jams, e.s.l. spin songs that will catch your ear and entangle you in their spell. Ethereal vocal harmonies might evoke a late-night bar, with booty shaking beats, bold horns, lush string lines and no-holds-barred lyrics that convey a heartfelt reflection on life.
E.S.L. performs songs in 5 languages (Polish, French, Spanish, German and English).
